Tab Views and Functions of the ICD-10 Browser

The ICD-10 Browser consists of six major sections: Tabular, Index, E-Codes, Drugs, Neoplasms, and Mapping. Each section has its own Tab in the Page Control, and clicking the appropriate tab takes you into that section. All of the sections have a similar look and similar operations, except for the Mapping section. The Mapping section is different than the other sections and will be discussed later.

Each section displays its data as a "tree" list. There are main branches and sub-branches, called "nodes". You can expand and collapse nodes of the tree to see more or less detail about that part of the list. Clicking the mouse on the small symbols on the left side will expand and collapse that node. You can also use the keyboard right and left arrows to expand and collapse tree nodes. When no symbol appears to the left of a node then that node is fully expanded; there is no further data beyond that point.

Each section has an Expand/Collapse button to fully Expand and Collapse the entire tree. Each section also has a function to Find nodes that contain your search text, and a function to Filter the tree to show only nodes that match your search text. Finally, each section also contains a button or buttons to display the CMS documentation pertaining to that section. The CMS documentation contains further details not available in the ICD-10 Browser, such as Inclusion and Exclusion Lists, special notes, and other information. There is an ICD-10 Guidelines PDF button outside of all the sections on the far right-hand side of the screen. This button opens the CMS ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting document. All of the documentation is in PDF format and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader (free) or another PDF reader to already be installed on your system.

The Tabular and Index sections contain listings for every ICD-10 code, while the E-Codes, Drugs, and Neoplasms sections contain only those codes appropriate to the section. The E-Codes, Drugs, and Neoplasms sections are broken out for ease of use, and are not required for code lookup, but may make code lookup more efficient. The tabular section lists all ID-10 Codes organized by code, and the Index section lists all ICD-10 codes organized by their description, or term.
